We recently revisited Riversdale Thai as it is a popular Thai restaurant for the locals of the Camberwell area. This was following a discussion with another nom seeker, Senor Muchacho who queried whether there are any good Thai restaurants in Melbourne at all. Hoping to show him amazing Thai, we were a bit disappointed that it did not live up to our tastebuds' memories.
For entrée we ordered:
Grilled Calamari which came with a garlic and chilli dipping sauce. These were well grilled but slightly under seasoned. |
Chicken spring rolls. These were very nice. But then so is anything deep fried. |
Tom Kha - Chicken in coconut soup with galangal herbs. I would not be ordering this again. It was so heavy with the coconut cream it was a bit sickening. We just ate a few tablespoons and left the rest.
Prawn Spring Rolls. These were more-ish. They had individual prawns wrapped in spring roll pastry. Yum. Could have eaten a dozen, easy.
For mains, we ordered the following with rice:
Gaeng Dang Ped - red curry with coconut cream and duck. It was good in theory - pieces of duck breast and veggies in a curry sauce. But it was too coconut creamy for me.
Chicken Pad Thai. This was ok. It was slightly too sweet for me. But I can understand why other's would love it. It had the tamarind tang with the sweetness and the slick noodles. It would be popular with kids.
My pick of the bunch! Pad Gapow with Beef Basil, Chilli and Vegetables. I would go back and just have this. Lovely basil infused flavours, mild kick of chilli, tender beef strips - yum.
So it appears we are still questing for a good quality Thai restaurant in Melbourne's East. Riversdale Thai is an ok Thai restaurant. It has a few star dishes (Pad Gapow and Prawn Spring Rolls) but I found the curries and soups a bit too rich and the noodles a bit too sweet.
