Straits of Malacca, Glen Waverley

Hello Fellow Nom Seekers!

So as far as kopitiams or hawker stall food goes, the Straits Of Malacca do not do their own roti or offer grilled satay sticks - all very enticing and moreish offerings.  They do however, provide twists on classic favourites which leave you feeling like you have had good value for money eats.

Case in point - their Nasi Lemak.  This is the only place I know of which serves a whole fried fish along with their Nasi Lemak.  Yes, you still get your curry beef/chicken, fried anchovies, achar, peanuts, fried egg and coconut rice BUT you also get a whole fried fish with a sambal dressing.  It was delicious.  The beef was a nice piece of meat ie with no weird gelatinous bits or gristle - belief me, I have experiences involving weird cuts of meat in curries.  But not here.

The Singapore Noodles was very flavorsome.  It is a good dish for those who can't take the (chili) heat.

The classic Char Kwai Teow.  A very big serve.  Honestly I believe that is their tactic to reel you in - offer a mountain sized servings of spicy rice noodles and goodly amount of Chinese sausage, bean sprouts and fish cake.

Malaysian Choices Combination Hor Fun.  With lots of eggy gravy because that's what this dish is all about.  Plenty of calamari floating in there.  This would be one of my favourites.  It has two types of rice noodles (the flat ones and the thin ones) which are full of 'wok hai'.

Chicken Curry Laksa.  This is my 7 year old's favourite.  It has a few hidden goodies not commonly found in other laksa - okra, clams and fried eggplant as well as the standard fish balls, fish cakes, bean sprouts, chunks of chicken.

This place is gives bang for your buck and if you order their Malaysian Combination Hor Fun, Chicken Curry Laksa and Nasi Lemak - you will not be disappointed.  Their only down fall is that timing of their food is not the best - often one poor soul is left auto-digesting the lining of their stomach while waiting forlornly for their order and everyone else is tucking into their meal.
